Lot 2: A Framed Monochromatic Print of L'accident at Gare Montparnasse, Paris, 1895

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £1

Buyer's Premium:

A monochromatic print, likely a digital pigment or offset lithograph, depicting the iconic locomotive crash at the Gare Montparnasse in Paris on 22 October 1895. The image captures the aftermath of the Granville-Paris express overshooting the buffer stop and crashing through the station wall onto the Place de Rennes. The station facade clearly shows the inscription CHEMINS DE FER DE L’OUEST. The print includes printed text in the margins; the upper right margin reads L’accident and the lower right margin bears the mark Leone, identifying this as a commercial reproduction. The original photograph was taken by Leopold Louis Mercier. The piece is housed in a modern white-painted wooden frame with a white mount under glass.

Condition report:

The print is in very good condition, exhibiting no evidence of foxing, fading, or silver mirroring. The contemporary wooden frame shows minor surface scuffs and light wear to the edges.
